Puppets tap into emotions
July/2007 Medicine Hat News
Are you feeling happy? Sad? Angry? More importantly, do you know why you
feel this way? This is the point of Marla Rosens tour across Canada, to
give parents, teachers and health-care practitioners a medium they can
utilize to discuss emotions with children.
Publishing an Emotions book and CD, Rosen uses multi-sensory resources to
educate children about the topic of emotions.
Often we think a big part of education is learning about different subjects
such as math and science. What we fail to realize is that educating children
about their emotions . . . as Dr. Bill Wine of High Park Youth House
Foundation puts it, significantly impacts their social integration and
ability to successfully handle interpersonal relationships, said Rosen in
a written statement.
Rosen will be performing the Emotions Puppet Show and Concert while in
Medicine Hat on July 19 and 22. The purpose of the show is to support her
book and CD, raising awareness about childrens mental health and behavioral
education.
If a child understands how they feel and why they feel what they are
feeling, they are better equipped to deal with situations as they arise,
said Rosen.
The puppet show and concert will engage and lead children through realms of
human emotions.
Throughout the show, the child is engaged and encouraged to participate
through an integration of puppetry, dance, theatre and live sing-along
music, said Rosen.
The full-colour book focuses on about 10 human emotions and has a 10-song CD
insert corresponding the content.
Its a fun and educational resource tool for the children to read along
while listening to the CD, said Rosen.
Musicians who perform on the CD include Bill Sample (who has performed with
Celine Dion and Oscar Peterson) and Michael Friedman (who has performed with
Randy Bachman and Don Ross). There is also a performance from Vancouvers
Bach Childrens Chorus and Juno Award winner Steve Dawson.
Rosen said the CD is good both as a classroom learning tool, at home, or in
child-based therapy programs.
The first show will take place at the Medicine Hat College on July 19 at
6:30 p.m. The second and third shows will be on July 22, at the Saamis
Teepee at both 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The shows are geared toward children
aged 10 and younger.
The Emotions book and CD is marketed and distributed by White Knight Books,
and is $19.95. For more information visit www.whiteknightbooks.ca
